Quantity limitations and recommendations

Quantity limitations and recommendations
Longer chains for larger animals

Longer chains for larger animals
The collar is delivered with a standard length chain which fits animals up to 18 inches around the neck. If you have animals with wider necks eg. bucks or larger breeds, you need to purchase additional longer chains.

The collar is delivered with a standard chain length which fits animals up to 49 inches around the neck. If you have animals with wider necks eg. bulls or larger breeds, you need to purchase additional longer chains. For cattle, we recommend that you can fit a fist vertically between the collar and the animal’s neck. The picture to the left shows a well-fitted standard chain that would fit most cattle. If you are uncertain the standard chain will be long enough, it may be a good idea to purchase additional sets of longer chains.

Shelter Beacon for Sheep and Goats

Use of Shelter Beacon

Use of Shelter Beacon
Shelter beacon – a Bluetooth unit used to switch off the fence function in Nofence collars within a 32 ft radius. Inside buildings, roofs and walls might obstruct the GPS signal. This may cause false positions, and the animals might get warning sounds or electric pulses in the worst-case scenario. The shelter beacon prevents this from happening. When a collar is within a 32 ft radius of a shelter beacon, the fence function is switched off. When the collar no longer is within a 32 ft radius the fence function is switched on again. Shelter beacons are battery powered with AA batteries.

Animals with access to a shelter or barn may experience poor GPS reception inside. Shelter beacons inside a barn or shelter disable the fence functionality while the animals are inside the shelter. Shelter beacons should be installed every 250 square feet, with a minimum of 2 shelter beacons.

Spare Batteries & Chargers

Need for chargers and batteries
Charger recommendations are based on the number of collars in your order and the need to charge multiple batteries at the same time. When you receive your collars, all batteries will need charging prior to equipping your herd with collars.
When you receive the collars, the batteries will be approximately 30% charged (due to shipping restrictions).
To fully charge a battery for a sheep & goat collar you need approximately 8-10 hours.
To fully charge a battery for a cattle collar you need approximately 14 hours.

Need for extra batteries
The number of extra batteries needed varies by customer, hence recommendations are for the average customer needs.
Those experiencing longest battery life have relatively large pastures and quite a lot of sunlight that hits the solar panels.
Batteries can be changed while the collar is on the animal. A battery change requires running animals through a chute or handling cooperative animals.

Need for extra batteries
Cattle batteries stay charged for quite a long time. Extra batteries are more of a nice-to-have than a need-to-have.

Replacing batteries can be challenging while collars are on cattle. Adjustments to your chute may be necessary in order to access the collar. It is a good idea to plan battery replacements during times of the year you are working your cattle.
Subscription

Your Subscription
The initial subscription covers your first 12 months of service and is paid for in advance. This includes a data plan that allows the collars to communicate with the app and automatically downloads software updates. Dedicated customer support is also provided as part of your subscription.
After the initial 12 month subscription, the subscription changes to monthly billing and you only pay for the months when collars are in use eg, if you don’t use collars for 4 months during the winter you will not pay for the subscription during these months. You will only be charged up to 8 months of use, meaning that if you graze year round the Nofence subscription is free of charge for four months.
Starts when collars are delivered.

You will want to use Nofence in areas with good cell coverage. The collars connect to the cell network to send their positions and statuses to your app. The cell network is also used to transfer animals to new pasture areas. If you can typically receive a phone call or send a text message in your pasture, Nofence will likely work for you. However, if you live in an area with no cell service reception, Nofence is not a good option for you. The best way to ensure you will have adequate cellular coverage is to try the following:
- Check your signal strength and your ability to open apps on your cell phone while in your pastures.
- Check cell coverage through the coverage maps below:
AT&T: https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html
T-Mobile: https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/coverage-map
- See the distance of cell towers near you via common tower finding apps.
